Playing the Mega Millions
Playing the Mega Millions safely online is possible, so you do not have to be a US resident to take part in this lottery. Draws are made twice weekly, on a Tuesday and a Friday at 11pm, with a playing format that is straightforward: you simply pick five ordinary numbers (from 1 to 70), and one Mega Ball number (from 1 to 25) for your ticket. To win the jackpot you would need to match all six numbers to those that are drawn. If you are stuck for numbers you can select the Easy Pick option which will assign random numbers to your ticket.
For a further challenge, you can add a Megaplier to your lottery ticket when you buy it. This gives you the chance to multiply any winnings by 2, 3, 4 or 5, excluding the jackpot. All you have to do is watch for which Megaplier ball is selected on draw nights right before the main draw takes place. The Megaplier ball comes from a pool of 15 balls: 5 balls of 2X, 6 balls of 3X, 3 balls of 4X and a single 5X ball. This is an extremely popular option with players and can boost your winnings significantly.
Just the Jackpot
Certain states also hold the Just the Jackpot offer, which is an option that allows you to only play for the Mega Millions jackpot prize. You are therefore not eligible for any other tier prizes, apart from the jackpot. Check your state’s lottery website for more details.
Mega Millions Prizes
Winning on the Mega Millions
Each time the Mega Millions jackpot is won the next starting jackpot is always a minimum of $40 million. This is followed by rollover increases of at least $5 million until somebody wins the jackpot. The jackpot could be shared by multiple winners and there are no caps on maximum jackpot prizes either, as well as a total of nine tiers of prizes, which makes for some amazing winning amounts, depending on how many matching numbers are drawn.
The odds of winning some sort of cash prize are 1 in 24, so your chances are good of a win. Winning the jackpot gives you the option of claiming a one-off cash payment (the value of which will be slightly smaller than the jackpot. You will still need to pay taxes as well), or annual payments to the full amount over 29 years, with a 5% increase to keep pace with inflation.
The prize amounts vary greatly, from $2 for one matching Mega Ball drawn, all the way up to $1 million at the second tier of available prizes (which could even be multiplied up to $5 million with a Megaplier option!) All of this ensures that the Mega Millions remains one of the biggest lotteries in the world!
