Playing the Powerball

Tickets are available in 44 states or online, so there is no difficulty participating in one of the biggest lotteries around from anywhere in the world. It’s easy to play the Powerball: just pick five numbers for your ticket, from 1 to 69, and one Powerball, from 1 to 26. Either use your own favourite numbers or choose the Quick Pick option, for a random selection of numbers to be assigned to your ticket. The draws take place every Wednesday and Saturday at 11 pm ET.

The Power Play

If you would like to play for the chance of higher prizes, you can buy an optional Power Play for your ticket where you have the chance to have any winnings (excluding the jackpot) multiplied by 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X or 10X (which is only available when the jackpot is under $150 million). The second-tier prize of $1 million is automatically doubled to $2 million with the Power Play. The Power Play comes from a pool of 42 balls (or 43 if the single 10X ball is being used): 24 balls of 2X, 13 balls of 3X, 3 balls of 4X and 2 balls of 5X.

The odds of winning any prize are good, at 1 in 24.9. The initial jackpot starts at a huge $40 million and carries on increasing by at least $10 million until there is a winner, making for massive jackpot amounts!

The Powerball has nine different tiers of cash prizes, with the second tier being worth $1 million before a Power Play, and $4 being on offer at the lowest tier. The jackpot is won by matching all five balls and the Powerball drawn to your ticket. The jackpot may be shared by multiple winners, but lower-tier prizes are fixed.

If you win the jackpot you can elect to claim your winnings as a one-off cash payout, which will be a bit smaller than the jackpot, or you can choose to receive 30 equal annual payments (which increase by 5% per annum to keep up with inflation) - the choice is yours.
